    Races, Racing (Tobyato)

A word play pun on the double meaning of the word “race”, both as the different ethnicities in Singapore, as well as the GRAN TURISMO driving race.

Drawing inspiration from traditional ornamental motifs found around Singapore from the 4 major race groups, “Races, racing.” is my artist impression of a contemporary take of a patchwork quilt on a car. The artwork features unique motifs from each race, weaving between one another, flowing across the whole car. These motifs interact with one another across the car, mimicking how the many races in Singapore work together, to race forward as one car and one country.

    Indonesia

    Speedy Jungle (Muklay)

Javan spitting cobra and Sumatran tiger are the main design elements of the Toyota Supra 20, Toyota Yaris, Toyota New 86, and TS050 Hybrids. The Javan spitting cobra is depicted as having a raised head with an expanded neck signalling that it’s ready to strike the enemies with its dreadful venom. Sumatran tiger is one of the endemic animals living in Indonesia and is the only surviving member of the tiger subspecies. Sharp sight and the swiftness of the tiger symbolize strength of the four cars of the Gran Turismo. Logs are symbols of the habitat of both animals. It is also a symbol that Indonesia is a tropical country with many beautiful tropical forests and must be preserved. The colour options used are mainly fluorescent and vibrant tone that overlaps the black area as signature colours of Muklay’s artworks, which will make this car not only fun to watch but also stand out in the race.

    Malaysia

    Blastin’ Batik (Cloakwork)

Widely known around the regions of South East Asia, Batik has deep roots in the east coast of Malaysia. The word Batik, translates to drops (traditionally wax dropping onto fabric), which can be depicted as dots in the background of the car design. As Batik is generally flat on fabric, contrary to the design, portrays the flow of Batik designs around the anatomy of the car. The intricacy of it constructs an exceptional form to the design coupled with light yet vibrant colours.

Together with the flora in the background, the foreground illustrates the fauna found in the tropical jungles of Malaysia. Subjects such as the hornbill, orangutan and tiger paw are paired with the most popular motifs in Malaysian Batik, the flower and leaves. The design creates an iconic interaction that can be seen in Cloakwork's illustrative style.

    Night Blooming Flower (Zooka)

Hear the silence of the night.
    Suddenly, breaking the silence
Is the blooming of a flower,
And the roar of a car.
I thought of the racing car as a blooming flower.
    So charming, and colourful.
The shape of flower is designed in reference to Dancheong, a traditional pattern in Korea.

Let’s feel the speed of driving, and at the same time, the stunning beauty of a flower blooming.

    Thailand

    Pasutha-Phayu (Tikkywow)

A play on words of two meanings, that conveys Thailand well. Because when you hear it, you will feel the power of the wind. And the propulsion vibrates across the GRAN TURISMO racetrack.

The design is inspired by the patterns of the formidable Thai giants and a powerful elephant, as a work of art with a unique pattern that stands out from each other. It gives a sense of unity for both the car and the driver on the GRAN TURISMO track representing Thailand.

    Taiwan

    Neon Taipei (Pixel Jeff)

Walking in the Capital of Taiwan – Taipei city, always gives me “Cyberpunk” vibes since there’re lots of neon signs and streetlights, which became the inspiration for my design.

The challenging part was how to visualise the neon signs and city buildings while also injecting the feel of speed. So that sparked the idea to design in oblique abstract shapes with neon palettes – keeping the design simple yet futuristic.

The whole car is not only covered with “Cyberpunk” vibes but also with some “Retro Wave” look and feel.

    India

    Turbo Masala (Gaurav Basu)

India is a complex and diverse land filled with colour and unique cultural practices like truck art which became the source of inspiration for this design. Each element in the design represents one of the aforementioned attributes. Mandalas are a unique artform that has existed in the subcontinent for centuries. They are beautifully symmetrical diagrams composed with ornate intricacies. This embodies the complexity of India, while the use of multiple iconic motifs like the Bengal tiger, mudras, lotus flowers embody the idea of diversity. The diverse nature of the design is a throwback to the word “Masala” which is a mixture of spices. A vibrant colour palette was developed to draw attention to the design and the choice of shades were inspired by the festival of Holi making this artwork quintessentially Indian!
